The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a 20-character, alpha-numeric code based on the ISO 17442 standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It connects to key reference information that enables clear and unique identification of legal entities participating in financial transactions. Each LEI contains information about an entity’s ownership structure and thus answers the questions of ‘who is who’ and ‘who owns whom’. Simply put, the publicly available LEI data pool can be regarded as a global directory, which greatly enhances transparency in the global marketplace.

Four key principles underlie the LEI:

  1. It is a global standard.
  2. A single, unique identifier is assigned to each legal entity.
  3. It is supported by high data quality.
  4. It is a public good, available free of charge to all users.

Once a legal entity has obtained an LEI, it will be published together with the related LEI reference data by the organization that has issued the LEI. This means the full data on the entire LEI population is publicly available for unrestricted use by any interested party at all times.

Structure of Legal Entity Identifier (LEI Code)

Characters 1-4

Prefix used to ensure the uniqueness among codes from LEI issuers (Local Operating Units or LOUs).

Characters 5-18

Entity-specific part of the code generated and assigned by LOUs according to transparent, sound and robust allocation policies. As required by ISO 17442, it contains no embedded intelligence.

Characters 19-20

Two check digits as described in the ISO 17442 standard.

The ISO 17442 standard specifies the minimum reference data, which must be supplied for each LEI:

  • The official name of the legal entity as recorded in the official registers.
  • The registered address of that legal entity.
  • The country of formation.
  • The codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions.
  • The date of the first LEI assignment; the date of last update of the LEI information; and the date of expiry, if applicable.

Level 1 Data “ Who is Who”.

The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) connects to key reference data that provides the information on a legal entity identifiable with an LEI. The Level 1 data explains “ Who is Who”. It provides basic data of entity like

Level 2 Data “ Who owns Whom”

In addition, the LEI data pool includes the ‘Level 2’ data that answers the question of ‘who owns whom’. Specifically, legal entities that have or acquire an LEI report their ‘direct accounting consolidating parent’ as well as their ‘ultimate accounting consolidating parent’.

Connect the corporate dots globally with open, standardized and high quality LEI data.

Distinct procedures apply regarding the publication of information related to direct and ultimate parents with and without an LEI.

  • If the direct and / or ultimate parents of an LEI registrant have obtained an LEI, the LEI of the parent(s) is published together with the LEI record of the child entity. Likewise, the LEI record of an organization that is the direct or ultimate parent of another organization that has obtained an LEI will display the LEI of the child entity or entities.
  • If the direct and / or ultimate parents of an LEI registrant do not have an LEI, the child legal entity is obliged to report reference data on its direct and ultimate parents to the LEI issuing organization. However, in line with applicable policy, the reference data reported by a child entity for its direct and ultimate parents without an LEI is currently not published.
